Playing in the Mud...

6/3/2014

What would possess a grown man to torment himself by running through knee-deep mud, submerse himself in frigid ice water, and voluntarily electrocute himself? Hmmmm... that is a very good question. One that I asked myself several times at the start of these mud-run events.

To date, I have participated in 2 Tough Mudder events that raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that Knight Architects proudly supports. These events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. As part of the Twisted Blister Team, we tackled these events with the mantra "Start as a team, finish as a team."

Our most recent mud adventure was the Savage Race. This event raised money for numerous charities including Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Autism Speaks, BASE Camp Childhood Cancer Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. While this 7 mile event was shorter than the previous events, it made up for it by the number and size of the obstacles.

So, back to the original question of why would I do this? The simple answer is because I can. It is to honor those brave men and women that have sacrificed so much for us to live the lives of freedom that we all too often take for granted. I also do it to help raise awareness for the children of our country that must battle severe odds everyday just to survive. There are many people in this country that need our support. If putting myself though 2-4 hours of physical and mental anguish can help accomplish that, then that I feel is a small price to pay and does not even come close to what these individuals must endure on a daily basis.
